The place of christening of Adam Mickiewicz and a silent witness of the past. The baroque parish church of the Transfiguration of Jesus was built in the years 1719-1723. It was erected on the site of the former church founded by Vytautas the Great in the late 14thcentury. The church features one nave and a chancel in the form of a closed semicircle. The façade, crowned with a triangular top, is accompanied by two low four-sided steeples. The nave of the church features surviving barrel vaults, and the chapels – Gothic ribbed vaults.

This Navahrudak parish church is where Adam Mickiewicz was christened on 12 February 1799. There is a plaque to commemorate that day. The church deteriorated significantly during the Napoleonic Wars, when the French adapted it for warehousing purposes.  With the passing of time, it became increasingly dilapidated, and the Russian authorities never issued a permit for its renovation. Change came only after Poland regained its independence in 1918. Unfortunately, after WWII, the church became neglected once again.

2013

The recent years were much more favourable for the church. The first step towards a comprehensive renovation was made by the Warsaw branch of the “Polish Community” Association, with the Association of Academic Traditions taking over later on to pass the baton to the Cultural Heritage Foundation in 2013, at the last stage of the project.

The planned works were carried out by a team managed by Kazimierz Patejuk.

The project was carried out thanks to the Minister of Culture and National Heritage’s funds granted to the Foundation as part of the “Cultural Heritage” programme, priority: “Protection of Cultural Heritage Abroad”.
